Day Before the IE

I woke up today to plan out my last prescriptive teaching presentation. In the morning, I planned on doing a demonstration of rescuing an unconscious diver at the surface. After Warren briefed us about what he was going to do in the water, he said it was my turn. What? I was supposed to have prepared a Open Water teaching presentation. Oops.

I winged my briefing with just the description of what I was to teach—demonstrate the four steps in preparing a victim for in-water resuscitation. Easy enough. Since I have a lot of practice doing Open Water briefings I was able to go through the briefing without my cue card. I actually did alright.

In the water it was just a matter of Grace preparing the victim by making contact, establishing buoyancy, calling for help, and checking for breathing. The rest of what I had to do in the water was to demonstrate how to handle an unconscious diver at the surface by preparing, giving rescue breaths while towing and taking off both our equipment. I did it too quickly but that’s easily remedied. Overall, I was fairly relaxed about the whole exercise because I was confident in what I was doing and so did quite well.

For the rest of the afternoon Warren talked about Risk Management and Legal Responsibility. After that, he went over my scores during the course and gave me some pointers for the IE the next day. If he didn’t feel I could pass the IE, he would have told me at this time; he didn’t.

In the evening Warren, Maziar and I were stuck at the Point bar because of heavy rainfall. I wanted to wait out the rain but it didn’t seem like it was leaving for a while. It was raining so much, even if I had an umbrella, I would still get soaked. Later in the night, Warren invited Maziar and I to go with him to eat at Captain Gregg’s bar and restaurant down the beach in Sabang.

We waited for the rain to reduce to a drizzle and made a break for Captain Greggs. Early on in our walk the rain started picking up again. Then, in the middle of our walk there was a power failure in the city. Everything turned pitch black and I got seperated from Maziar and Warren. I didn’t know how to get to the restaurant. I waited a little more to see if the rain would subside but it didn’t. I accepted the fact that I was going to get really wet and just went out towards the restaurant. I was drenched, the ground was flooded.

At Captain Greggs, they run a BBQ until 9 PM. I ate their all-you-can-eat salad with an imported Australian steak. The steak was cooked good but the meat was really tough and there wasn’t much taste to it too. I miss a good steak.
